Stipend and Other Benefits

All MSH residents are considered time-limited, non-permanent state service employees for the duration of the internship year. The stipend for each intern during the 2022-2023 training year is $36,624 annually, and interns are provided with full benefits of MSH employment. Benefits include paid major medical insurance, sick leave, personal leave, access to the MSH Employee Assistance Program (EAP), 10 paid holidays per year, 5 professional development/dissertation research release days per year, and contributions to the state retirement fund. Stipends are paid on a twice monthly basis.

Leave

Interns begin to earn and accumulate personal leave on the first working day of each month the intern works or receives paid leave. Personal leave is available for the intern’s use on the first day of the month after the leave is earned. 

Medical Leave

Interns begin to earn and accumulate Major Medical Leave on the first working day of each month the intern works or receives paid leave. The leave is available for the intern’s use the first day of the month after the leave is earned. There is no maximum limit to Major Medical Leave accumulation. All unused Major Medical Leave will be counted as creditable service for the purposes of the retirement system.

Retirement

As employees of the Mississippi State Hospital, interns will be enrolled in the Public Employees’ Retirement System of Mississippi (PERS).    

Health Insurance

Interns are eligible to enroll in the state employees' health insurance. A House Officer agrees to maintain one of these plans or another plan with equal or better benefits.
